A location that calls for a defined plan.

Operating at Sphere in Las Vegas brought a clear requirement: the drone needed to follow specific routes. In the densely populated environment around the Strip, control of the flight path mattered to both the production and our approach to safe operation.

We used waypoint programming to define the missions and combined it with RTK positioning. The aim was to follow the intended routes accurately, with the flight plan shaped around the needs and requirements of the operation.

A programmed route, supported by precise positioning.

Waypoint missions give the aircraft a planned route to follow. RTK—real-time kinematic positioning—helps it determine its position more accurately. Together, they support the execution of a defined aerial path.

The client appreciated that accuracy. The ability to combine programmed missions with precise positioning gave the production a predictable approach to the required routes, with safety central to the conversation.

Keeping wind in the decision.

Wind makes accurate route-following more demanding. The positioning support provided by RTK is useful in that discussion, but wind performance also depends on the aircraft’s flight-control system and its operating limits.

RTK does not increase the aircraft’s wind resistance. Actual wind, gusts and site conditions still determine whether a planned mission can proceed, needs to change or should be stopped. DJI lists wind resistance separately from RTK positioning accuracy (opens in a new tab).

The client’s response.

The client was very happy with the combination of waypoint missions and RTK accuracy. For this work, the value was the ability to follow specific routes with a controlled, planned approach.

That is the production lesson we take from Sphere: when the route matters, flight planning and positioning technology should be considered together from the outset.
